June 23 Random Observations of The Grand Lake Bum Summer is here – officially! According to the calendar, it arrived with high temperatures beginning with a “9” last Friday on what is typically referred to as “the longest day of the year.” That’s not true, by the way. I stayed up all day and all night just to make certain. Sure enough, it was the same length as all the other days – 24 hours. FYI. ***** For the second consecutive weekend, there is a concert on the water Saturday. Despite the outrageous wind, last weekend’s Rock the Dock concert in Check-In Bay drew lots of spectators who were as anxious to get on the water as they were to hear great music – and they did both! This weekend is no different. The much anticipated Grand Jam in Duck Creek (in front of Harbors View Marina) is Saturday from noon ‘til 6:00. Let’s hope for a little less water and a little less breeze! ***** Grand Jam isn’t the only event signaling a really busy week on the waters of Grand Lake, though. The High School Fishing World Final and National Championship Fishing Tournament has the lake covered with high school fishing competitors this week. The tournament runs through Saturday, which is the final day. Also on Saturday, amidst the hundreds of boats full of high-schoolers, the Grand Lake Sailing Club hosts a Peanut Regatta with a bunch of sailboats. What could possibly go wrong? ***** Some people are just a lot quicker and better than others with responses to others who complain about things without thinking them through. One of my favorites is a flight attendant for British Airways who received a complaint from a woman who said she was not comfortable with the lack of blinds in a Boeing 747 first class restroom that had a window. “Madam,” said the flight attendant, “If someone is clinging to the side of this aircraft at 35,000 feet, they’ve earned the view.” ***** How did that old Beach Boys song go? “Bomb, bomb, bomb…bomb, bomb Iran.” Was that it? ***** GRAND LAKE BUM SHOUT-OUTS: Happy birthday wishes go out this week to Grand Lakers Jason Benson, Rob Stallings, Angella Johnson, Joe Zaloudek, Terri Fowler, Vic Bird, Dallas Sorrels, Bobbie Owens, Larry Sanders, Tonya Moorhead, John Jameson, and Dandy Risman. ***** BEST GRAND LAKE EVENTS THIS WEEK: Monday-Wednesday is “Kids’ Camp” at The Anchor at Shangri-La (8:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.). Tuesday is the kick-off of the five-day High School Fishing World Final and National Championship Fishing Tournament on Grand Lake. Thursday is Trivia Night” at BOOM at The Regatta. Friday & Saturday, there is “Lawn-a-Thon” inflatable fun for the kids on The Anchor Lawn at Shangri-La (11:00-5:00). Saturday is another Peanut Regatta from Grand Lake Sailing Club and the big Grand Jam on-the-water concert at Safe Harbor Harbors View Marina in Duck Creek (12:00-6:00 p.m.). Saturday night is Country Music Night at Big Shots (9:00 p.m.). Next Wednesday, the holiday fun begins with Vinita Fireworks at Craig County Fairgrounds. ***** RANDY KREHBIEL’S FACTOID OF THE WEEK: Although best remembered as a silversmith (and his midnight ride), Paul Revere also practiced dentistry and fashioned false teeth from various materials. ***** FUN FACT OF THE WEEK: The King Ranch in Texas covers 825,000 acres. It is larger than Rhode Island. ***** ODD FACT OF THE WEEK: William Wrigley, Jr. sold soaps in 1891, offering buyers baking powder as an incentive. The baking powder became more popular, so he started selling it, offering gum as an incentive. But the gum was even more popular, so he started selling that. In 1893, he launched Juicy Fruit Gum. ***** BEST FACEBOOK POST OF THE WEEK: Some people drink deeply from the well of knowledge. Others just rinse and spit. ***** WORD FUN OF THE WEEK: “Sugar” is the only word in the English language where “su-“ makes a “sh” sound. At least, I’m pretty sure that’s right. ***** BEST SIGN SEEN THIS WEEK (seen on the door of a family-owned diner): Sorry, CLOSED. Jack punched Alex because he found out Alex was messing around with Janice, even though Jack and Janice are broke up. Anyway, Alex’ tooth went into the chili, so we can’t open till we find it, ‘cause we can’t throw away all that chili. Sorry, again. ***** BEST BLUESKY POST OF THE WEEK: Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad. Philosophy is wondering if that means ketchup is a smoothie. ***** PUN OF THE WEEK: What happens when a microscope crashes into a telescope? They kaleidoscope! ***** UNANSWERED QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Why has someone from Earth won all 71 “Miss Universe” titles? No one from anywhere else in the universe has ever won. ***** OBSERVATION OF THE WEEK: If you can’t think of a word, just say, “I forgot the English word for it.” That way, people will think you’re bilingual instead of an idiot. ***** QUOTE OF THE WEEK: “The trouble with quotes on the internet is that you never know if they’re genuine.” – Abraham Lincoln ***** FEEL-OLD MOMENTS OF THE WEEK: Superstar actress Meryl Streep turned 76 years old Sunday; and the music legend, Sir Paul McCartney, has turned 83. How ‘bout THIS for feeling old? The terrifying movie “Jaws” was released 50 years ago this week! ***** BEST WEEKEND LIVE ENTERTAINMENT: On Monkey Island, Sundown Entertainment hosts Thursday night karaoke at Doc’s Bar & Grill at Shangri-La (6:00-9:00 p.m.) and Scott Musick performs live Friday night at Doc’s Bar & Grill at Shangri-La. Downbeat will provide the music Saturday night at Eddy’s Lakeside Bar. There’s musical Bingo fun with Sundown Entertainment Wednesday night at The Monkey Bar, and DJ Kennedy with Rockstar Entertainment leads the singing Friday night followed by live music from Robbi Bell Saturday night. Carl Acuff, Jr. will be on stage Friday night at Cherokee Casino Grove’s 1897 Bar followed by Runnin’ on Empty Saturday night. Robbie Bell starts the weekend music Wednesday night at Mooney’s Sunset Bar & Grill in Disney followed by B and Ava Thursday night, Hi Fidelics Friday night, The Faulconers Saturday night and The Smith Brothers Band Sunday afternoon (4:00). The Jesse Joice Trio will entertain at Blind Swine Duck Creek Friday night – and Saturday is a really big line-up at the Grand Jam on-the-water concert at Blind Swine Duck Creek/Harbors View Marina (noon-6:00) including Lickitty Split, Randall George & Friends, and Damsel. There are three nights and one afternoon of music this week at Indigo Sky Casino. TJ Scarlett starts the music Thursday night followed The New Waves Friday, and Paralandra Saturday. Nestled along the scenic shores of Grand Lake—just an angler's cast away from the historic Pensacola Dam—the Grand River Dam Authority’s (GRDA) Ecosystems and Education Center stands as a testament to the authority's commitment to environmental stewardship and education. This state-of-the-art facility plays a crucial role in GRDA’s ongoing efforts to manage and protect the natural resources under its care. Extensive Natural Resources The GRDA oversees nearly 70,000 acres of lake water surface in Oklahoma, encompassing the vast expanses of Grand Lake, Lake Hudson, and the W.R. Holway Reservoir. Since 2016, its stewardship has also extended to the picturesque waters of the Illinois River. This extensive area is not only vital for recreational activities but also serves as an important habitat for various wildlife species. Advanced Water Quality Laboratory At the heart of the Ecosystems and Education Center is a state-of-the-art water quality laboratory. Here, GRDA's dedicated team members engage in ongoing water quality monitoring, ensuring the health and sustainability of the water resources. Regular testing and analysis enable the GRDA to maintain high standards of water quality, safeguarding both recreational users and the ecosystem. A One-Stop Resource for Lake Area Needs Beyond the laboratory, the Ecosystems and Education Center serves as a “one-stop permit shopping” location for lake area residents and visitors. Whether you are preparing to build a dock, an angler looking to schedule a tournament, or someone seeking lake-related permits for Grand Lake or Lake Hudson, the center offers the resources and assistance you need to navigate the permitting process smoothly. Community Engagement and Education One of the most significant features of the Ecosystems and Education Center is the Grand Hall, a spacious auditorium and community meeting area available for rental. This versatile space offers stunning views of Grand Lake and Pensacola Dam, making it an ideal venue for events and gatherings. Throughout much of the year, the Grand Hall also functions as a classroom for student groups. Here, learners engage in educational programs focused on various topics, including: Ecosystem Management: Understanding the delicate balance of local ecosystems. Hydroelectric Power: Exploring how the GRDA harnesses water power to generate electricity. Water and Electric Safety: Learning essential safety practices for interacting with water and electrical systems. History of the Grand River Region: Delving into the rich history and cultural significance of the area. The Grand River Dam Authority’s Ecosystems and Education Center is more than just a facility; it is a vital resource for the community, promoting education, sustainability, and responsible stewardship of Oklahoma’s natural resources. Whether you are a local resident, a visitor to the area, or a student eager to learn, the center offers invaluable services and knowledge to enhance your understanding and enjoyment of the beautiful Grand Lake region. What was once a humble hayfield with only a few run-down hangars has transformed into South Grand Lake's vital transportation and economic hub. Today, the South Grand Lake Regional Airport stands as a testament to the hard work, determination, and community support that has turned a simple grass strip into a fully operational, state-of-the-art airport serving both personal and business aviation. Thanks to the contributions of local lake organizations, the town of Ketchum, and the airport's dedicated volunteers, including the Girlfriends of the Airport, the airport has undergone significant upgrades. With the addition of an asphalt runway, the airport now offers full-service facilities for both prop and jet aircraft, meeting the needs of aviators and visitors alike. The airport is a key gateway for travelers looking to visit the Grand Lake area, extending the region’s reach beyond the typical driving radius. By attracting visitors who would otherwise not have considered traveling to the area, the airport is helping to drive economic growth and tourism, with an estimated annual economic impact of $2.5 million. Future plans for the airport are even more exciting, with the development of new features that will make it an even more significant asset for the region. Coming soon are several major improvements, including the installation of an AWOS III (Automated Weather Observation System), aviation light industrial development, a new terminal building, expanded parking apron, and a parallel taxiway. The community's ongoing support is crucial to the success of the airport. If you're interested in contributing or have any questions or suggestions, please reach out to Brent Howard at 918-693-1855. South Grand Lake Regional Airport continues to grow, and its role in connecting the Grand Lake area to the broader world has never been more vital. Stay tuned for more developments as this essential community asset continues to soar. [read more]

What could be sweeter than spending an evening savoring decadent chocolate desserts while supporting a noble cause? The annual Chocolate Affair offers the perfect opportunity for chocoholics and dessert enthusiasts to indulge in an irresistible array of chocolate delights—all while raising funds for a worthwhile organization. Event Details Held on a delightful Wednesday evening in early March, the Chocolate Affair is hosted by Home of Hope, Vinita’s sweetest event that brings together the community for a night of gastronomic pleasure. Attendees can look forward to a sumptuous selection of chocolate desserts and sweet treats prepared by the finest restaurants, caterers, specialty shops, and wineries from Vinita and the surrounding Grand Lake area. A Sweet Tradition For many years, the Chocolate Affair took place at the Craig County Community Center. However, in 2021, the challenges posed by the pandemic necessitated a change in format. Embracing the spirit of adaptability, the Home of Hope transformed the event into a drive-through experience. This innovative approach not only ensured safety through social distancing but also garnered popularity among attendees. In past years, vendors delighted guests with delicious chocolate samples and an assortment of other tasty treats. For the drive-through event, all delectable sweets and chocolate delights were conveniently assembled into pre-packaged treat bags, allowing ticket holders to savor the experience from the comfort of their own homes. Highlights of the Evening The Chocolate Affair features a plethora of engaging activities beyond the tantalizing chocolate treats. Guests can participate in a silent auction, which has transitioned online since the event became a drive-through format. The event is known for its fun and creative themes, ranging from a whimsical safari to the enchanting world of Willy Wonka. Attendees have enjoyed special surprises over the years, including visits from Willy Wonka himself and even a free double-feature movie screening on one memorable occasion. Supporting a Worthy Cause The Chocolate Affair serves as a vital fundraiser for Home of Hope, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing residential, vocational, and quality-of-life programs for individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities across northeast Oklahoma. The event was launched in 2008 to bolster Home of Hope's programs and operations. Dr. Ralph Richardson, CEO of Home of Hope, emphasizes the significance of contributions to the event: “The support from the Chocolate Affair helps us achieve our mission of promoting choices, independence, and a meaningful life for the individuals we serve. As state and federal funding sources continue to dwindle, events like this are crucial for sustaining our services. We are incredibly grateful to the vendors and guests who make this event a success.” About Home of Hope Established in 1968, Home of Hope, Inc. operates in Vinita, Jay, Miami, Claremore, Grove, and Pryor. The organization serves over 270 individuals with developmental and other disabilities, employing more than 600 staff members to provide high-quality care and support. From the vibrant landscapes of Grand Lake to the intricate details of architecture, I have been fortunate to witness and capture the world in ways that celebrate both the grandeur of nature and the subtleties of human connection. With a lifelong passion for the outdoors and a growing eye for the artistic elements of life, I specialize in various types of photography that highlight the natural beauty of the world and the personalities of those within it. My Journey: From Adventure to Art Throughout my younger years, I immersed myself in outdoor activities such as off-road motorcycling, hang gliding, and boating on California’s Monterey Bay. Initially, I saw myself as an adventurer, someone focused on the thrill of the outdoors, rather than an artist. However, as I grew older, I started noticing the light, shapes, and patterns that others around me seemed to overlook. This new awareness led me to discover a passion for photography that I never anticipated. When I moved to Oklahoma and settled on the shores of Grand Lake, I gained the perfect environment for my newfound passion. With 60 miles of pristine freshwater at my doorstep, I regularly took my camera outdoors, capturing nature and wildlife in its endless variety. From that point on, nature and wildlife photography became my calling. Expanding My Lens: People, Homes, and Commercial Photography As I honed my skills, I also discovered the joy of capturing the essence of people. My background in counseling gave me a unique perspective on understanding personalities, allowing me to capture individuals in authentic, expressive ways. This skill set naturally evolved into capturing the beauty of homes and businesses through architectural and real estate photography. In addition to personal portraits and properties, I began to explore telling compelling stories through photos. One of my most beloved projects was The Secret Life of the Grand Lake Pelican, which gained popularity as a photo book. This led to the creation of another book, Jerry Ann’s Place, along with various photo collections paired with music and transitions, creating video-like productions that have been featured on local and national television. Photography Services Today, my work encompasses a variety of photography services, each designed to bring your story, business, or personal moments to life: Nature and Wildlife Photography: Capturing the breathtaking beauty of the outdoors, with prints available in canvas, metal, and ceramic. Architectural & Real Estate Photography: Showcasing homes and businesses with professional photography for listings, brochures, and more. Business Photography: Product shots, photo tours, and website images to bring your business to life. Photo Books: Creating stunning custom photo books that tell your unique story. Video/Proshow Presentations: Combining photography with music and motion to create immersive storytelling. Event Photography: Documenting your special events, from weddings to receptions. Seniors: Capturing your senior’s personality with thoughtful and artistic portraits. Drone Photography and Videography: Taking your photography to new heights with breathtaking aerial shots. Living in Grand Lake of the Cherokees has inspired me to share the natural beauty of this freshwater paradise with others. My photography now graces local and national television, magazines, and newspapers across the country. Through my lens, I aim to communicate the beauty of the world around us. Let me bring your vision to life with professional, artistic, and meaningful photography. Contact me today to schedule a session or learn more about my services! [read more]

Specialized Care Located in Oklahoma, Angel’s Pet Funeral Home and Crematory stands out as the only facility in the state entirely dedicated to honoring our four-legged companions. Unlike traditional funeral homes, Angel’s operates independently, ensuring that your beloved pet is treated with the utmost dignity and respect. Personalized Services for Unique Grief Understanding that grief is a personal journey, Angel’s offers a range of services to ease the burden during this challenging time. Viewing Rooms: Our facility features two warm and inviting viewing rooms where families can say goodbye in a comforting atmosphere. Memorial Options: Choose from laser-engraved urns or memorial stones to keep your pet’s memory alive. Engraving services are also available for a variety of materials, including leather, metal, and granite. Grief Counseling: We understand the impact of losing a pet and offer monthly grief counseling sessions led by a licensed therapist certified in pet loss therapy. These sessions are held on the second Saturday of each month and provide a supportive space for sharing feelings and memories. It’s Your Choice When the time comes, you have the power to choose how to memorialize your pet. Whether through cremation, burial, or a memorial service, Angel’s will coordinate with any veterinarian to alleviate the stress of this difficult process. Simply inform your vet that you choose Angel’s, and rest assured that both you and your pet will be treated like family. Our Services Pet Crematory: At Angel’s, we offer private cremations for pets of all sizes, conducted with dignity and respect. Our state-of-the-art facility allows families to witness the cremation if they wish. While it’s a difficult subject, we aim to provide a meaningful experience during such times. Cremation fees are based on your pet's weight; please contact us for detailed pricing. Pet Funeral Home & Chapel: Our chapel can accommodate up to 55 people, providing a serene space for memorial services or celebrations of your pet’s life. The chapel is also available for events or meetings, fostering a sense of community during times of sorrow. You can choose to have your pet brought from your vet’s office to the viewing room, allowing your family to grieve and say goodbye in a more personal setting. Pet siblings are also welcome to be part of this heartfelt goodbye. Pick-Up & Delivery Services: Angel’s offers complimentary pick-up from any veterinarian clinic within a 25-mile radius of Tulsa. For home removals, a fee of $35.00 applies. For pickups outside the 25-mile radius, a mileage fee of $1.50 per mile (one way) will be charged. Laser Engraving Services: In addition to urns and memorial stones, we provide engraving services for various items, allowing you to personalize your pet's memorial in a special way. At Angel’s Pet Funeral Home and Crematory, we are committed to providing a comforting and compassionate experience for families facing the loss of their beloved pets.
